books i’m reading {uglies series}

Yesterday morning I finished reading the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. There are 4 books in this series. The first 3 are more of a trilogy and the 4th one takes place a few years later. I loved the first 3 and they were really easy reads. I went through them really fast. The 4th one was good but I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as the others.
{first book} Uglies.

And maybe kick a good story for herself. Then Aya meets a clique of girls who pull crazy tricks, yet are deeply secretive of it. Aya wants desperately to kick their story, to show everyone how intensely cool the Sly Girls are. But doing so would propel her out of extra-land and into the world of fame, celebrity…and extreme danger. A world she’s not prepared for.
I would definitely recommend these books for anyone about 12 or older. I loved them and they were fun, easy reads.

getting healthy {clean eating and motivation}

Part of my motivation this week is to really try eating a lot healthier. I’m surrounded by people who have been losing weight, like my brother who has lost over 100 pounds and Dan who has lost about 20 pounds. I’ve been running and exercising but it hasn’t really made a difference. I’ve been going up and down in weight within 5 pounds. I know that for me, a lot of losing weight is about what I eat. And I haven’t been eating awful but not that great either. 
So I decided that I need to pay a lot more attention to what I’m eating. I’ve been seeing a lot about clean eating on Pinterest. I’ve decided to try clean eating. I know I can’t do it 100% of the time, but I can do it most of the time. Dan and I went grocery shopping on Sunday and I bought a lot of fruits, veggies, chicken and beans. Yesterday I ate really well and so far today I have eaten really well. I need to find some recipes for meals because as of right now I feel like I mostly have snacks. I know it will take a little bit to really get into it but I know I can do it.
Dan isn’t as conscious about what he eats right now and I have a hard time when there are junk foods at the apartment. I have a good willpower at the store, but at the apartment….not so much. So I decided to hang some motivational signs up to help me.

I am definitely going to look for some delicious recipes and I plan on sharing them on here. I also plan on sharing my progress. We will see how this goes.
Does anyone else have similar issues as me? Is anyone clean eating? Any ideas for me?

 

getting motivated

Ok. So I have been super unmotivated for the past few weeks. I haven’t been posting on here much. I haven’t been doing much, period. I don’t know really know what has been going on. I think it has something to do with not having a teaching job, only working at old navy part time, and being totally broke.
I’ve been kind of down about still not getting a teaching job. It is so frustrating. But with almost 200 people applying for each position, I just don’t know what to do. Hopefully next year something will come up for me.
Anyway, this week I have started to feel more motivated. I am motivated to eat healthier, really work on losing more weight, do some crafts, to post all of the things I haven’t posted about, and just do more things other than watch TV all day.
So here is to being motivated!

do it yourself {dry erase calendar}

Dan and I have been talking about having a big calendar that we can write things on because so much has been going on. We have a wall hanging one but we don’t write anything on it and there isn’t really a lot of space. I saw this dry erase calendar on Pinterest, which is from The Aesthetic Writer, and decided to give it a try.

I got a 16×20  poster frame that was 50% off at Joann’s. I also went to Home Depot and got a bunch of free paint chips. I decided to use yellow because I figured it would be light so we could see what we write clearly. I didn’t love the selection of yellow but I found enough. I got 6 colors and 4 of each color. I knew I could get 2 blocks out of each paint chip. I used a paper cutter to cut the blocks so they would be even. I cut them 2 inches by 2.5 inches.

I cut 6 of each color so I ended up with 36 blocks. I only needed 35 so I didn’t use one. I opened the frame and used the back of the paper that came in the frame. I laid out the edge so I could see how far apart to space the blocks. I glued the edge down then laid out the rest of the blocks and glued those down. I had a space at the bottom that I left white. I figured we could write notes or anything important from the next month. I wrote the days of the week above the blocks on the white. Then I put the paper back in the frame.

I bought an eraser and bright colored dry erase markers because I think they’re more fun. I wanted to put them next to the calendar so I made a little pocket to hang on the wall out of scrapbook paper. I just used a half sheet of paper, folded a bottom up and folded the sides around and taped it closed. Then I tacked it to the wall with flat thumb tacks. The stuff fit in perfectly without me checking before finishing it, so it worked out perfect.

At the apartment right now, we didn’t have many choices on where to hang the calendar. I wanted it somewhere it was easy to get to so we could write on it easily. We decided on the kitchen. There is an ugly phone jack right in the middle of the wall and this frame didn’t fit over it, so we had to put it next to it. It works for now and when we have a house, I’m sure we will have a nicer place to hang it.
I wrote the dates with a dry erase marker and the things we have going on this month. So now all we will have to change is the dates each month and add all of our activities. I love the way it turned out. And if we use it a lot and love the way it is, I would love to find a nice frame for it. This will work for us for now.

couch to 5k {ten weeks down, zero to go}

I have finished my 10 weeks of my couch to 5k program. I finished 5 weeks of the actual program and 5 more weeks of Dan’s program that he came up with for me. I am so proud of myself. I know I still have a long way to go but I feel incredible having finished 10 weeks of a running program.
This last week was definitely the hardest with the longest running times.
The first day was walk 3 minutes, run 30 minutes, walk 2 minutes, run 4 minutes, walk 3 minutes.
I had a hard time on this day. I ran the whole 30 minutes, which I was so proud about, but it was hard. I don’t know if it was the heat or that I waited 3 days since my last run, but I had to push myself really hard. And I did it. I didn’t run any more after the 30 minutes and just walked back to the car.
The second day was walk 3 minutes, run 34 minutes, walk 2 minutes, run 4 minutes, walk 3 minutes.
I ran the full 34 minutes which was just about a 5k. That makes me feel so good because I know I can actually run an entire 5k.  After the 34 minutes, I walked 3 minutes and ran another minute and then walked back to the car.
The third day was walk 3 minutes, run 40 minutes, walk 3 minutes.
I did not run a full 40 minutes. I walked 3 minutes and ran 22 minutes. My leg started to hurt while I was running and I felt really tired. I pushed myself but had to stop because of my leg. I ran the 22 minutes then walked and ran off and on til I got back to the car. I was somewhat disappointed that I wasn’t able to do the full 40 minutes. I know I will get there though.
Today I decided to go for a run just to go for a run. It was a little weird not having a certain goal in mind but it was also kind of nice. It was a little hot so I wasn’t planning on going really far. And my leg started to hurt again. So I walked 2 minutes, ran 22 minutes, walked 2 minutes, ran 3 minutes and walked 1 minute back to the car. I know I will get to a point where I can run further, I just need to keep up with the running and keep pushing myself.
My original goal for the 5k was to run more then I walk. Now that I basically ran a 5k and knowing that I still have 2 months to train, my new goal is to run the entire 5k. I know that I can do it and it makes me really excited.
I will definitely keep posting about my running. It helps keep me motivated knowing that I am sharing it with whoever is reading this. 🙂
