running goal for 2013

29 Dec

I already posted about the race series that we are participating in for next year. The first race is on the 1st, which is Tuesday, and I know it is going to be awful. It is going to be cold and I am no where near able to run 3 miles anymore.

I decided that, since I will be training for 5k’s all through the year, that I would set a running goal for myself. I was thinking about it and talking with Dan about how many miles I could give myself as a goal. 1,000 seems too overwhelming for me right now and 500 seems a little low.

I decided to give myself a goal of running 700 miles in 2013.

This makes me a little nervous but I know I can do it. 700 miles in the whole year equals out to about 60 miles a month, or about 15 miles a week. I think I will use the monthly goal of 60 miles to keep myself on track.

I hope this goal keeps me on track. I also am hoping to lose a little more weight and become healthier in 2013 so I think this goal with help with that.

I will keep the blog updated occasionally on my progress throughout the year.

Run-Goals

Is anyone else giving themselves a running goal? Or an exercise goal?

christmas trees with the family

27 Dec

Another tradition we have around the holidays is getting our Christmas tree. We always go with my mom and brother to pick out Christmas trees. I love this tradition. We go to the gorgeous tree farm in Madbury, NH. We wander around trying to find the perfect tree. They have sleds and saws that you can use and they also have hot apple cider for when you are finished in the cold. It is the perfect place.

Picture8

My mom and step-dad get 2 trees, one for inside and one for outside.

Picture9

Dan and I were looking for a skinny tree to fit in our apartment. We found one that looked great right away but, of course, we wanted to look around just to make sure. We went back to that first one. We usually end up getting one of the first trees we find.

Picture7

After the tree farm, we went back to my mom’s for lunch. Then we went home to decorate our tree! Dan isn’t really into decorating so I do most of it on my own. I don’t mind though because I love doing it.

Picture10

We have a mix of ornaments, some that we have bought together and some that I’ve gotten from my mom that she doesn’t want to use anymore. Dan and I try and buy at least one new ornament every year just to keep some new ones in the mix. Here are some of my favorite ornaments that we have. Some are new and some are old.

I love Christmas time. It took me a little time to get into the spirit this year, but going to pick out a tree and decorating our tree definitely helped.

christmas parade and family time

27 Dec

I am currently on vacation from school so I’m going to try and catch up on some posts.

The Sunday after Thanksgiving, my mom’s side of the family always gets together. We go to the Christmas parade in Dover and eat and spend time together. This year was no different. The only person who couldn’t be there was my cousin Joe because he had to head back to school in West Virginia.

We all got to my grandfather’s house and hung out for a little bit. Then we got bundled up and went to stand in our usual spot to watch the parade. The parade seemed shorter this year but we still had fun. And Santa was great. This parade always has a great Santa at the end.

Picture1

On our walk back to the car, we decided to take a little detour. My grandparents used to live right by this museum with a cannon outside. We always used to climb on the cannon and we would pretend that we were shooting off somewhere amazing. We walked right by so we decided to recreate our climbing. It was a little harder now that we’re a little older but it was still fun and we laughed like crazy.

Picture5

After our little detour, we went back to my grandfather’s to decorate the tree and eat some food. My mom always puts the lights on the tree, because she is amazing at it.

Picture2

Then my cousin Julia and I always do the ornaments. The boys never want to help decorate. We always have a lot of fun with it.

Picture3This was a little harder this year because my grandmother wasn’t around and she always helped us with the decorating. We decided to do the angel for the top of the tree together.

Picture4

We wanted to make sure we got some family pictures of everyone together. I wish Joe had been there but we still got some amazing pictures. We set the timer on our camera so everyone could be in the pictures. My grandfather is sitting right in the center and his face never changes, even with all the craziness going on around him. I love our family.

Picture6

This year is definitely a lot harder not having my grandmother around, but I feel like it has brought our family closer together. We’re making sure to take even more pictures and spend even more time together. These are some of my favorite people in the whole world and I’m so lucky to be able to spend so much of my time with them and to call them family.

thanksgiving {in ny}

18 Dec

I know this post is way late. I thought I was going to be able to catch up on my posts faster but hopefully I can get some done this week.

For Thanksgiving, Dan and I traveled to NY to go to his parent’s house. We left Tuesday night when Dan got out of work. We got there late, around 10:30. I pretty much went right to bed.

On Wednesday, Dan and I relaxed for a bit and went for a quick run. His brother, sister-in-law, and niece Abby showed up in the early afternoon. We were very excited to see them because we don’t get to see them very often with how far we live from each other. Wednesday afternoon and evening were spent just relaxing and spending time together. We all read a lot of books with Abby, and she loves her Unkie Dan.

Picture1

Thursday morning we got up early so Dan and his brother, Jon, could run in the Turkey Trot 5k. Amanda, Abby, and I went with them as support. It was cold and we got all bundled up to wait for them to cross the finish line. We spent lots of time walking back and forth on the wall.

Picture3

Later in the day, we bundled up again to head to the playground down the street.

Picture4

Thanksgiving dinner was delicious. A few family members came over and we had tons of delicious food that Dan’s mom made. I was sooo full by the end of the meal. It was a nice, relaxed, family dinner.

On Friday, we just relaxed as a family and spent time together. It was the last day we were all going to be there so we just wanted to spend time together. We like to soak in all the time we get with Abby because she is growing up so fast.

Picture2

We left Saturday around 12 to drive home. It was a wonderful way to spend our Thanksgiving holiday and it was so nice to see family that we don’t get to see often.

portsmouth community road race series

18 Dec

I ran two 5k’s in the past few months. I trained hard for the first one and felt really good. I ran the whole thing in about 30 minutes. The 2nd one was kind of last minute and I was not prepared for it. I couldn’t run for the whole thing and finished in about 33 minutes.

I have decided that I want to take running more seriously and use 2013 to really get healthy.

Dan, a couple of our friends, and I are participating in a road race series in 2013. There are 2 different series in the area. They are doing both series. I’m only doing one.

The one I’m doing, the Portsmouth Community Road Race Series, is all 5k races. There are 7 races and if you run 6, you get a jacket. I am planning on running all 7. The first race is in January and the last race is on Thanksgiving.

runners_3

The first one is on January 1st. That is 2 weeks away. 2 weeks. from today. holy cow. Am I ready for it? no. I have not been running, or even really exercising. We were gone for Thanksgiving. Then I was sick for 2 weeks. And we have been busy. So I really need to get in gear and start getting ready for this race. I don’t plan on being amazing but I also don’t want to totally suck it up.

We got a treadmill from my grandfather’s basement that no one has been using. Now we just need to fit it in our apartment and I think that will help since the weather has been so crazy outside.

I’m so afraid it might be freezing on the 1st and that will not make my running any easier. But who knows…maybe it will be a gorgeous day. I guess we will have to wait and see. And I will definitely keep updating on here about how things are going.
