new year’s eve

28 Jan

This year we had a quiet night for New Year’s Eve. We had gone out 2 nights in a row the 2 nights  before New Year’s. We hung out at my mom’s house with my step-brother and his girlfriend and a couple of friends. We had some drinks, played some games, watched some stupid NYE TV, and took some crazy pictures {which just got crazier and crazier}.

We always have a ton of fun together. It was nice to just hang out by the wood stove and not have to worry about any crazy NYE plans.

In these pictures we were trying to pose like Fergie was for her entire hosting job. Did anyone else notice that? Our poses didn’t work out quite as well…

2012 was not a great year for me and I was looking forward to it being over. I was ready to welcome a new year with some new hope and new goals to look forward too. And I wouldn’t have wanted to ring in midnight with anyone else but my amazing hubby.

Did anyone do anything super fun for New Year’s or did you also have a kind of quiet night at home?

celebrating christmas

22 Jan

{ok ok ok…I know I keep saying how things are getting crazy and how I’m going to catch up on posting but than I’m not catching up. I feel like I just keep making excuses. I don’t really know what is going on….I feel like my blogging motivation has been pretty low since before Christmas. I’m not sure why but I’m hoping I can get better again starting now. I really appreciate everyone out there who is still reading my blog}

I know this post is late but I want to tell you about our Christmas. It was a pretty quiet day but it was a really great day, better than I thought it would be. I knew Christmas was going to be really hard this year without my grandmother. It definitely was, but I think our family did a great job of just getting together and loving one another.

Dan and I started out the day with stockings. We decided not to do presents because we don’t have a lot of money but thought stockings would be fun. Dan did a great job with my stocking! Lots of yummy things and practical things because that is just who Dan is and I love it.

We got ready for the day and headed over to my step-grandmother Barbara’s house for some snacks. Some of my step-dad’s siblings were there. We hung out for a bit and had some yummy food.

After that, we went over to my grandfather’s house for the rest of the day.

The house was warm and cozy and felt right for Christmas. For the past few years, we have been doing our family Christmas on a day other than Christmas so that everyone can be there. I’m so glad that we were able to all get together on Christmas this year because I think it made it easier.

We had lots of presents under the tree.

Our family is definitely a present opening family. As soon as everyone was together, we decided to dive right in to the presents. I was nominated to be Santa so I passed out all of the presents. Our tradition is to do one present at a time so that everyone can see what everyone else is getting. It is my favorite way to open presents.

My mom and I both made Shutterfly books for everyone. She made books of just us 4 cousins with pictures of us throughout the years. I made books of just the 4 of us with DeDe, my grandmother. I think everyone loved both of the books.

When the presents were done, we just spent some time relaxing, listening to Ryan play some songs on the guitar. We also ate some delicious food.

Julia and I also went through my grandmother’s jewelry so we could decide what we would like to keep and what we didn’t want. It made me sad but felt good to go through some things.

I made my brother and cousin put on their presents so I could get some pictures of them. Yay T-Rex!

I love spending time with these people. With the exception of Joe, we all live pretty close to each other but I still don’t feel like I see them very often. Life gets so crazy. I wanted to make sure we got some family shots before we all headed home.

Love my little brother. He is one amazing person.

And of course we had to get some with Bubby.

For a day I thought was going to be so hard was actually really nice and relaxing. It was a great way to spend Christmas. As much as I miss DeDe, I’m so glad I still get to spend Christmas with these crazy people.

christmas trees with the family

27 Dec

Another tradition we have around the holidays is getting our Christmas tree. We always go with my mom and brother to pick out Christmas trees. I love this tradition. We go to the gorgeous tree farm in Madbury, NH. We wander around trying to find the perfect tree. They have sleds and saws that you can use and they also have hot apple cider for when you are finished in the cold. It is the perfect place.

My mom and step-dad get 2 trees, one for inside and one for outside.

Dan and I were looking for a skinny tree to fit in our apartment. We found one that looked great right away but, of course, we wanted to look around just to make sure. We went back to that first one. We usually end up getting one of the first trees we find.

After the tree farm, we went back to my mom’s for lunch. Then we went home to decorate our tree! Dan isn’t really into decorating so I do most of it on my own. I don’t mind though because I love doing it.

We have a mix of ornaments, some that we have bought together and some that I’ve gotten from my mom that she doesn’t want to use anymore. Dan and I try and buy at least one new ornament every year just to keep some new ones in the mix. Here are some of my favorite ornaments that we have. Some are new and some are old.

I love Christmas time. It took me a little time to get into the spirit this year, but going to pick out a tree and decorating our tree definitely helped.

christmas parade and family time

27 Dec

I am currently on vacation from school so I’m going to try and catch up on some posts.

The Sunday after Thanksgiving, my mom’s side of the family always gets together. We go to the Christmas parade in Dover and eat and spend time together. This year was no different. The only person who couldn’t be there was my cousin Joe because he had to head back to school in West Virginia.

We all got to my grandfather’s house and hung out for a little bit. Then we got bundled up and went to stand in our usual spot to watch the parade. The parade seemed shorter this year but we still had fun. And Santa was great. This parade always has a great Santa at the end.

On our walk back to the car, we decided to take a little detour. My grandparents used to live right by this museum with a cannon outside. We always used to climb on the cannon and we would pretend that we were shooting off somewhere amazing. We walked right by so we decided to recreate our climbing. It was a little harder now that we’re a little older but it was still fun and we laughed like crazy.

After our little detour, we went back to my grandfather’s to decorate the tree and eat some food. My mom always puts the lights on the tree, because she is amazing at it.

Then my cousin Julia and I always do the ornaments. The boys never want to help decorate. We always have a lot of fun with it.

Picture3This was a little harder this year because my grandmother wasn’t around and she always helped us with the decorating. We decided to do the angel for the top of the tree together.

We wanted to make sure we got some family pictures of everyone together. I wish Joe had been there but we still got some amazing pictures. We set the timer on our camera so everyone could be in the pictures. My grandfather is sitting right in the center and his face never changes, even with all the craziness going on around him. I love our family.

This year is definitely a lot harder not having my grandmother around, but I feel like it has brought our family closer together. We’re making sure to take even more pictures and spend even more time together. These are some of my favorite people in the whole world and I’m so lucky to be able to spend so much of my time with them and to call them family.

thanksgiving {in ny}

18 Dec

I know this post is way late. I thought I was going to be able to catch up on my posts faster but hopefully I can get some done this week.

For Thanksgiving, Dan and I traveled to NY to go to his parent’s house. We left Tuesday night when Dan got out of work. We got there late, around 10:30. I pretty much went right to bed.

On Wednesday, Dan and I relaxed for a bit and went for a quick run. His brother, sister-in-law, and niece Abby showed up in the early afternoon. We were very excited to see them because we don’t get to see them very often with how far we live from each other. Wednesday afternoon and evening were spent just relaxing and spending time together. We all read a lot of books with Abby, and she loves her Unkie Dan.

Thursday morning we got up early so Dan and his brother, Jon, could run in the Turkey Trot 5k. Amanda, Abby, and I went with them as support. It was cold and we got all bundled up to wait for them to cross the finish line. We spent lots of time walking back and forth on the wall.

Later in the day, we bundled up again to head to the playground down the street.

Thanksgiving dinner was delicious. A few family members came over and we had tons of delicious food that Dan’s mom made. I was sooo full by the end of the meal. It was a nice, relaxed, family dinner.

On Friday, we just relaxed as a family and spent time together. It was the last day we were all going to be there so we just wanted to spend time together. We like to soak in all the time we get with Abby because she is growing up so fast.

We left Saturday around 12 to drive home. It was a wonderful way to spend our Thanksgiving holiday and it was so nice to see family that we don’t get to see often.

30 day shred {…i’m not really sure how many days…}

20 Nov

So, my 30 Day Shred experience is completely messed up.

I have about 6 days left still. I got sick and didn’t work out for 2 days. I went to Orlando for the weekend for my chorus’ international competition so I didn’t work out. Yesterday I was so exhausted and today we’re leaving for NY for Thanksgiving. So I still have about 6 days left.

I was going to measure myself before I left for Orlando but never got around to it. So….I kind of messed myself up. I’m going to try and workout a little in NY but I won’t be doing the DVD. I’m planning on finishing the 30 Day Shred next week when life gets back to normal but I know it won’t be the same.

Oh well. It is what it is and, at this point, there isn’t really much I can do about it. So we will see how it goes next week.

Dan and I are leaving tonight for NY. We will be there until Saturday because we are spending Thanksgiving with Dan’s family this year. I plan on doing a lot of relaxing and reading and spending time with our 3 year old niece Abby and maybe a little school work that I really need to do also.

I still plan on posting a little but I hope everyone has a fabulous holiday and eats lots of delicious food!
