happy new year!

1 Jan

Happy New Year to all the readers of this blog! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season!

I decided to share some of my favorite pictures from the past year. They are some favorite moments and favorite pictures. It was so hard to choose and I ended up with more than I thought. But that is ok. Hope you like them.

2012 was not a great year for me. It started off really crappy and didn’t get much better. I wasn’t that sad to see 2012 come to an end.

I’m hoping that 2013 will be much better.

Dan and I have been talking about resolutions and I thought I would share some with you guys.

I already posted about my running goal of 700 miles in one year. I started that one off right today by running a 5k, which I will post about later.

I’m planning on participating in the 365 Project and taking and posting a picture every day at 365project.org. You can follow me there if you’d like.

Dan and I decided that we need to watch TV less and actually get some more things done. We’re going to spend more time just listening to music and doing things around the apartment that we need to do.

I’m also going to get more serious about opening an Etsy shop. I’ve been thinking about it a lot over my vacation and I have some ideas. When my long term sub job is over at the beginning of March, I will have more time to concentrate on my crafts.

I am also planning on checking some more things off of my 30 by 30 list so we will see how that goes.

I hope everyone has had a great start to their year and that it continues to go wonderfully.

Happy New Year!

do it yourself {photo frame}

11 Nov

I have been wanting to hang more pictures up around our apartment for a while. Dan isn’t really willing to hang a bunch of pictures up though, because of all the holes he’ll have to fill when we move. So I wanted to come up with a way to hang pictures without actually hanging a bunch of frames.

So thank you Pinterest for, once again, having brilliant ideas for me use.

I found this amazing frame project on Pinterest. It is from the goodwillionaire blog and I loved it as soon as I saw it. I knew it would be perfect for what I wanted.

Now I just needed to find an awesome frame to use and I would be all set.

Finding a frame proved to be a little more difficult. I never saw frames like this at thrift stores. Dan I looked at Home Goods because we have a gift card and we found some that would have worked and we would have only had to pay about $15ish after the gift card. We decided to still keep looking. Our next stop was ReStore, which benefits Habitat for Humanity. We were thinking maybe we could find a cool old window or something. We didn’t find an old window but we came across 2 huge frames for only $5 each! The picture was super ugly and the frame was just a plain wooden frame, already painted my favorite color of teal, but the frame was really big and I knew it would work. So we bought both.

We threw out the pictures and the mats because they were old and dirty. We decided to save the glass just in case we might need it for something in the future. And we pulled out all the staples from the back so we were just left with the frame.

The paint was a little worn out and I didn’t like that you could see a line of unpainted wood on the inside, so I decided to do a quick coat of teal just to clean it up. {I somehow missed taking a picture of the new paint job but the colors were pretty close}

I bought twine to use to hang the pictures on and used a glue gun to attach it to the frame. I spaced each line of twine out by 6 inches so there would be a little space around the pictures. I wanted to use twine because I like the way it looks kind of rustic.

I let the hot glue dry for a couple hours to make sure it was really secure.

I used mini clothespins that I bought at WalMart to attach the pictures to the twine. I had a few wedding pictures that I knew I wanted to include on this so I put those on first. I had just ordered 101 free prints from Shutterfly the day before, so I just had to wait for those to come before I had more pictures to hang.

Last night, when we got home from a long day, there was the orange package from Shutterfly sitting by our mailbox. I knew I wanted to hang more pictures up right away. So, even though I was exhausted, I looked through those pictures and hung more up right away.

I absolutely love the way this turned out. I would love to have a fancier frame at some point but I think this works amazingly until then. I love how easy it will be to change pictures out as we do more activities and want to include those new pictures. And I love love love being able to hang more pictures up without putting tons of holes in the walls.

What do you guys think?

hurricane sandy {checking out the storm}

30 Oct

I had yesterday off. School was closed because of Hurricane Sandy. And Dan left work early because of the storm. So of course, what would we decide to do? Go out in the storm of course.

We decided to head down to the beach to check out the waves and the wind. The wind was so so so strong. I don’t think I have ever been in wind that strong. I think at one point I was actually leaning into the wind and still standing.

We weren’t the only crazy ones to brave the storm….

We were ready for the weather. At least I was with my huge yellow rainboots.

We left Hampton Beach and went down the street a little to the beach we usually go to. We couldn’t even make it down the steps because of all of the sea foam and how high the water was.

And the wind was blowing so hard we were getting attacked by sea foam blowing all over the place.

The storm wasn’t really that bad here. Just some rain and a lot of wind. We didn’t lose power but I know there are a lot of people who did. I hope everyone is staying safe and gets their power back soon.

Does anyone else go out in the storm to check out the beach or the area?

fall fun {columbus day weekend}

16 Oct

Columbus Day weekend was last weekend. We had a long weekend and it was crazy busy. We, of course, filled pretty much every minute of the weekend up because that is just what we do.

Friday night we relaxed because we knew we had a busy weekend ahead.

Saturday morning started out bright and early with us heading to Dover for Dan to run a 5k. After the 5k, we walked around the Apple Harvest Festival, which was crazy packed, even at 10am.

From there, we headed home so Dan could shower. Then we went right back out to meet up with some friends at the Portsmouth BrewFest. A bunch of breweries all come together so people can taste all of their beers. There were so many breweries and beers and people. It was crazy. I’m not really a beer drinker at all but I did try a few and ended up liking at least 1. It ended up being really warm but it was a blast hanging out with some faves.

After the BrewFest, Dan and I left so we could drive right to New York for a wedding on Sunday. When we got to the hotel, we hung out with the bride and groom and a few of their friends before we needed to go to bed because we were exhausted.

The wedding wasn’t until the afternoon on Sunday, so we decided to use our time in Plattsburgh and go to Ausable Chasm. It is this really cool place with about 5 miles of trails. Some go right along the chasm, which is what we mostly walked. I loved being right there on the small stone pathways and hearing the water rushing by.

There was also a trail that went down to a dry chasm. There was beautiful foliage throughout the trail.

At the end of all the trails, there was a big bridge that gave a fantastic view of the waterfall.

After Ausable Chasm, we went back to the hotel room to get ready for the wedding. The wedding was for one of our friends from college. They live in North Carolina and we barely ever get to see them so it was really great to be able to celebrate with them on their wedding day.

The ceremony was in a beautiful ivy covered chapel. It was gorgeous inside and out. The reception was at a hall down the road and there was delicious food and good music.

After the 2 busy days we had already had, we were exhausted. We took our time getting ready Monday morning then headed out of NY to come home. The sky was amazing when we took the ferry from NY to VT. I had to take some pictures.

We were going to do a little hiking on our way home but it just didn’t work out how we thought. We did do some leaf peeping though. The foliage was gorgeous.

We found this really amazing little area with a curvy road and tons of yellowy trees. So beautiful. There were tons of people there but I managed to take some good pictures.

Driving down the road a little further, we got a view of some mountains. And there was snow on them. SNOW. I am not ready for that.

All in all, it was a really great weekend full of a ton of fun, crazy, and amazing activities. And we were exhausted when we got home. I went to bed early Monday and Tuesday night. But it was worth it.

sunrise {at the beach}

20 Sep

You know those days when it is the only morning of the whole week where you can actually sleep in…and your stupid body wakes you up early anyway? Well, Sunday was one of those days for Dan and I. We both got up and he suggested we go down to the beach quick and watch the sunrise. It was perfect timing. And the sunrise was beautiful.

I guess sometimes it is worth it to get up early on the only day you would be able to sleep in. The world is pretty amazing sometimes.

photo a day challenge {august}

9 Sep
I know this is a little late but with school starting I got a little behind. And I’m behind on my blogging in general anyway. So here is the August photo a day challenge.

These are all the pictures I took for this challenge. They go in order from left to right.

I love most of the pictures. I just got too busy towards the end. Oh well, at least I got it all finished eventually.

summer fun {walking around Portsmouth}

25 Aug

I love the town of Portsmouth, NH. There are so many interesting things to see and places to just stroll around. A few weeks ago, I decided to take our camera and just go take a walk around to see what I could find. I ended up mostly just taking pictures at Prescott Park because it ended up being hotter than I thought so I didn’t spend as much time as I thought. There are beautiful gardens and it is right on the water. Definitely one of my favorite places.

It was a lovely couple hours wandering around.
