memorial day weekend {monday}

7 Jun
On Monday of Memorial Day weekend, we had a family day. It was a day when everyone could actually all get together. We decided to get together to have a little memorial for my grandmother. My grandmother wanted her ashes spread in the ocean off the shore of Great Island Common. We decided that Memorial Day would be a good day to go out on the boat to do just that, and it just happened to be 3 months from the day she passed away.
All the ashes were separated into bags so we could all have our own moment and do what we needed to do. There was also a skipping rock in each bag so it would sink. And we brought some daisies along because those were DeDe’s favorite.

We took out my parent’s new boat, which is named Sweet Gal because that is what DeDe called everyone. It was a beautiful day on the river.

Even though it was an emotional day, we had a lot of fun on the boat and took a lot of “kid” pictures. I love these people. We have so much fun together.

There was a beautiful sunset when we returned to the house so we had some fun down on the dock.

We ended the night with a fire in the fire pit and some fireworks on the beach.

It was a super emotional day but it was a beautiful day with some of my favorite people in the world. It was a good way to end the weekend.

chocolate chip cookies {my second attempt}

24 Apr
So this past weekend we had the celebration for my grandmother. My stepbrother and cousin came up for the weekend and I knew we’d all be hanging out. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try making my grandmother’s chocolate chip cookies again.
Last time I made them, they came out too fat.

So this time, I put a whole extra stick of butter into the batter. That seemed to do the trick. They came out flat!

DeDe’s cookies were always flat and soft. I was so excited to see them flat. They were a little more crispy on the bottom but I think that is just our oven and I need to figure out how long to keep the cookies in so they don’t get crispy.

So I think I have the batter down and now it is just the timing. But I am happy they were flat and everyone enjoyed them and were excited that I am getting close to the perfect cookie! And DeDe always put them in plastic bags and when I put mine in a plastic bag, it looked just like hers. I loved it.

celebration of a wonderful life {DeDe}

24 Apr
On Sunday we celebrated the life of my grandmother. My grandmother passed away at the end of February. My grandparents decided a long time ago that they didn’t want a funeral. They didn’t want people to be sad. They wanted to have parties to celebrate their wonderful lives. So that is what we did.
We had the celebration at the Seacoast Repertory Theater. DeDe was a big part of this theater. She ran a senior acting group, Senior Moments, that was a part of the theater. After DeDe passed, the theater decided to dedicate their whole season to her. Her picture is on the first page of every program.

The celebration was amazing. Sooo many people came. You could just feel the love because she touched so many peoples’ lives. Some members of Senior Moments read some columns that DeDe had written. Some people spoke and told stories. My mom’s chorus sang. Some people from the theater sang. And my amazing brother sang his songs he wrote for DeDe. It was a wonderful way to celebrate DeDe’s life and I know she loved the whole day.
There was a guest book that people could write little messages in. I read a few and they were all so sweet. I know everyone loved my grandmother.
I wrote:
DeDe,
You are one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. You have always been my hero and you are more now than ever. I will love and cherish all our wonderful memories and be sure to share them with my kids someday. I miss you ever single day. I love you with everything I have.
Love, Brittany

I know there are a million things I could’ve written but it is so hard to put it all into words. I miss her more than words can say but I know she is around me every day.
I love you DeDe. ❤

chocolate chip cookies {my first attempt}

3 Mar

On my 30 by 30 list I have to learn to make DeDe’s chocolate chip cookies. They were the best cookies ever. I didn’t get a chance to learn how to make them from her so I am going to have to try until I figure out the perfect cookie. So, on Thursday, I was home all day and decided to give it a shot.

DeDe’s cookies were always flat and delicious. Mine came out too fat but I will keep trying.

It is rainy here but I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

friday five {what i’m loving this week}

2 Mar

I missed my Friday Five post last week because of everything that was going on with my grandmother. My grandmother, DeDe, passed away on Tuesday. So, this week, I thought I would do my Friday Five on things I’m loving about/for my grandmother.

1. front page article

Someone who has written articles about my grandmother before called my mom to do an interview. The article was on the front page of the local paper! Please click on the picture to check it out.

2. this is one of my absolute favorite pictures from when I was younger

3. this is one of my favorite pictures that is more recent

4. quote

I found this quote and thought it was very fitting. DeDe loved looking at the stars and I love the thought of this.

5. song

I know I already posted this song, One More Song, but I think it is so amazing and I love listening to it. It is perfect and means a lot.{you can click on the picture to listen}

Hopefully this week coming up things can go a little more back to normal. My life has felt so crazy.

Happy weekend!
